The M1931 was an italian designed mask adopted by the Belgian army. This design and its later iteration were in service for twenty years.

Mask overview

M1931 exhale valve

The M1931 face piece is made of beige rubber and it sports a six-point head harness and 50 mm "unbreakable" glass eye pieces, which were sturdier than previous belgian masks. Inside the mask there was a small sponge bridge that acted like an early oral-nasal cup, preventing fogging while wearing the mask. At the bottom there is the intake-outtake piece, which has a flapper style exhale valve and a rubber hose that is attached to the filter on the other side.

M1931 filter

Filter

The filter was a metal box stored in the satchel and connected to the mask by a hose. This kind of filter was quite small compared to previous belgian issues, and it had two reinforcing rods inside to prevent it from opening.

M1931 satchel

The mask come with its filter in the M1931 issue satchel, altough sometimes this kind of bag was replaced with the later M1934 satchel. The exhale valve is covered by a small cloth to protect it from damage.

The M1931 was made mainly by Pirelli, but some of the production shifted to Sacic (which is a Pirelli branch located in Brussels). On the left cheek of the face piece there is the company name, the date and the size in roman numbers.
